digiKam is a free digital photo manager and editor similar to Adobe Lightroom. It is open source, and will run on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Here are a few things you can do using digiKam:
  • Edit, enhance, and repair digital photos
  • Edit meta data like tags and ratings for images
  • View and modify RAW images, and convert between RAW formats.
  • View detailed information about an image, including geo-tags and face recognition

ufRaw is a free raw image reader/editor, that is a stand alone program and can also integrate with GIMP. It is open source software, and will run on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Here are some things you can do using ufRaw:
  • View images in RAW format, used by digital cameras
  • Resolve exposure and white balance issues of RAW images
  • Make adjustments based on your camera  and lens type

PhotoRec

PhotoRec is a free utility for recovering deleted media files from memory cards, CDs, and hard drives. It is open source software, and will run on Windows, Mac, and Linux. It is a command line only tool, and does not have a graphical user interface. Here are some things you can do using PhotoRec:
  • Recover deleted images, videos, documents, and other files
  • ‘Undelete’ files from memory cards, usb sticks, disks, CDs, hard drives and more…
  • Restore files that were even deleted several years ago, if they have not been overwritten
  • Recover files from filesystems like FAT, NTFS, exFAT, ext2/ext3/ext4, and HFS

GreenShot is a free screen capture program and image annotation tool. It is open source software, and works on Windows only. Here are some things you can do with GreenShot:
  • Select a region of your screen to capture as an image
  • Capture an image of a window (automaticlly crop image to size of window only)
  • Highlight, focus, blur, or magnify certain portions of captured image
  • Create screen shots for software tutorials, insturctions, or demonstations
  • Save images to your computer from websites that have ‘right click’ disabled

IrFanView

irfanview
IrfanView is a program for batch image re-size, rename, re-format, crop, and more. It is freeware, and free for personal use only. It is a Windows only program. Here are some things you can do with IrFanView:
  • Convert an entire folder of images, from one format to another, all at once.
  • Edit an entire folder of images, all at once, including re-size, crop, rotate, sharpen, etc…
  • Rename multiple images at once, numbered sequentially, such as, ‘thumb_### .jpg’
  • View images of various image format, including .gif, which is not supported in windows photo gallery.

PixResizer

PixResizer is an easy to use batch image re-sizer, rename, re-format tool. It is freeware/free for personal use, and available on Windows. Here are some things you can do using PixResizer:
  • Re-size an entire folder of images, simply by dragging a selector to the desired size ratio
  • Change multiple images at once from one format to another, such as .jpg to .png
  • Make photos file size smaller for attaching in emails or uploading to the web

ImageMagick

ImageMagicK is a free batch image re-size, rename, re-format, crop, etc… tool. It is open source software, and will run on Windows, Mac, and Linux. It is a command line only tool, and has no graphical user interface. Here are some things you can do using ImageMagick:
  • Can do the same things as IrfanView and PixResizer, but with greater flexibility and customization.
  • It can be more complicated to use, and is not recommended for beginners.
